I was actually planning to write a whole new post on Claire sleeping through the night, but Will has already told you about that. We liked the book: Good Night, Sleep Tight by Kim West. It's a good compromise between the scream-it-out and family-bed-until-a-teenager extremes.

It's not called "scream it out", it's called "Ferberizing", which I think is one step beyond vaporizing. Anyway, it worked brilliantly for us. The idea is to let your child cry until she has given up hope of anyone coming to her aid. This is when you've got her where you want her. Eventually, she loses trust in you and suffers a tremendous loss of self esteem. Only once she has realized that she is not worth being responded to does she learn the invaluable lesson that crying gets you nowhere. Plus, just imagine how happy she'll be to see you in the morning! Priceless.
